Prince Alfred College is proud to be an accredited International Baccalaureate School. The International Baccalaureate program reflects the school's concerns for increasing global awareness and intellectual rigour, and it provides opportunities for all students to achieve the highest levels of academic growth of which they are capable.
The IB Diploma is highly regarded by universities in Australia and throughout the world. It is taught in about 1000 schools world-wide, and the IB Diploma gives direct access to the most prestigious universities around the world. It is similar in depth and scope to British GGE 'A' Levels, the French Baccalaureate and U.S. Advanced Placement.
The Diploma is a two-year, pre-university certificate for senior college students, administered from the International Baccalaureate Offices in Geneva and Cardiff and examined by an international body of examiners representing many countries and cultural traditions.
Students undertaking the IB Diploma study:
1. The language and literature of their own first language (usually but not always English at Prince Alfred College)
2. A second language (such as Chinese, French, German, Spanish or English)
3. A Humanities subject (such as Economics, Geography, History, Information Technology in a Global Society or Philosophy)
4. An Experimental Science (such as Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
5. Mathematics (offered at various levels)
6. EITHER an Arts subject such as Visual Arts, Theatre Arts or Music, OR a second subject from 2, 3 or 4 above.
Our IB Diploma students have achieved results equalling the best around the world; they have been outstandingly successful in entering top-ranking universities in a wide range of courses, including engineering, medicine, commerce and law.
