The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) is an Australian, nationally recognised credential awarded to students who successfully complete their senior secondary education. The SACE is designed to ensure that students leave school with a strong general education and opens a number of pathways that lead to vocations and careers, further studies, and employment.
The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) signifies the completion of secondary education for most students in South Australia. Study is undertaken at Stages 1 and 2, which usually correspond to Years 11 and 12. With the appropriate choice of subjects, students can gain a tertiary entrance rank score (TER) for entry into universities throughout Australia. Students transferring from overseas or interstate may apply for block status for Stage 1, allowing them to complete the SACE in one year.
The SACE is designed to ensure a broad range of educational experience for students to prepare them for participation in society, for future employment and further study. It is possible to incorporate some vocational education and training (VET) as part of the SACE.
At each stage of the SACE, students are expected to study a range of subjects that ensure a balance between the humanities and the scientific and mathematical disciplines. At Stage 1, the compulsory subjects include English, Mathematics and Australian Studies as well as at least one science / technology subject and at least one arts / humanities / cultural subject. At Stage 2, the 5 chosen subjects must include at least one language-rich subject and at least one quantitative / experimental subject. As well, all students must satisfy the writing based literacy assessment, for which a folio of written work is submitted.
